Neuschwanstein Castle is the 19 th century Bavarian palace on a hill near Hohenschwangau and rugged south-west of Füssen in Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as homage to Richard Wagner, an inspiring muse of the king. Although the public pictures of the Interior is not permitted, is the most photographed building in Germany and is one of the country’s tourist destinations most popular.
Ludwig did not allow visitors to his castles, but after his death in 1886 the castle was opened to the public (in particular in connection with the need to pay the debts of financing the construction of Ludwig). Since then, more than 50 million people visited the Neuschwanstein Castle. Approximately 1.3 million people visit each year to 6000 per day in the summer. The palace has appeared in several films and was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park and Hong Kong Disneyland.
The palace is owned by the federal state of Bavaria, in contrast to a number Hohenschwangau Castle, which belongs to the Chapter House of Wittelsbach, currently Franz, Duke of Bavaria. Free State of Bavaria has spent more than € 14,5 million Neuschwanstein maintenance, repair and maintenance of visitors since 1990.
